Heather Ryan
Director Na Kamali‘i o Kaua‘i
Heather Ryan is a community leader on Kaua'i and is presently leading four Kaua‘i teenagers and four chaperones on a three-week trip to Europe. The students are participants in at-risk youth programs Rachel’s Challenge and Na Kamali‘i o Kaua‘i (royal children of Kaua‘i).
This isn’t the first time Ryan has traveled with at-risk youth. A few years ago she took 20 at-risk kids to Washington, D.C.Two of the boys on that trip are now on her board of directors for what she is doing right now. Na Kamali‘i o Kaua‘i extends throughout the island but is housed at Kapa‘a High School. Heather's principal Gilmore Youn saw her vision and supports her work with at-risk kids. The four students traveling with Ryan range in age from 15 to 17 years old.
“We have two programs,” said Ryan. “Rachel’s Challenge is named for Rachel Scott who died at Columbine — her dad came and spoke to our school. Rachel’s Challenge is a program that aims to bring a positive atmosphere to high school campuses. Three of the students going to Europe are from this program.”
At a fund-raiser last week the organization made, then served, vegan lau lau at the Blossoming Lotus. The boys showed up early and made the lau lau with the owners of Blossoming Lotus and the girls helped Heather collect money at the door.
Na Kamali‘i o Kaua‘i launched in August. They have a basic website and are creating a blog so everyone here can follow their travels. They start in London, then go to Norway for snow boarding. The next stop is Prague where the group will visit a former concentration camp. They’re reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel. Night is an account of a Nazi death camp. The kids were really impacted by it.
After that is Jerusalem. “I felt divinely led,” Ryan said and then described all of the connections that were made as she planned the trip. “We have friends of friends in Norway and I’ve been to London a few times — I’m walking on faith." While on the trip they’re making a film. One chaperone is a camera person and one is a producer. Two of her chaperones are TV celebrities in South Africa. She wanted them to work with her at-risk kids because of their hearts. These two grew up under apartheid.
Ryan said that her program is one of service and this is the message she wants to impart to her students.“I tell them that this program is about servant leaders- we are here to serve.” Ryan was selective when choosing her chaperones. The kind of people she wanted to bring were the ones who want to help the kids with service.
The group raised some of the money needed for the trip and also received a grant last fall. Ryan said she still had to take out a small loan on the day of departure though.“Any help would be appreciated,” she said. “We still need funds to cover the last week.”
