Robert Kai Irwin is a fourth generation Kama’aina in Hawai’i presently residing in Kailua, O’ahu with roots on the island of Hawai’i. He has been a teacher in the Hawaiian language immersion program for the past 10 years, and has been promoting healthy eating and improvements to the school lunch program in a culture-based charter school for the past 5 years.
He credits his father and fourth grade teacher, Miss Hewitt, for his early interest in all things uniquely Hawaiian and his desire to help the Hawaiian language again flourish in Hawai’i. His parents’ early reading of “Diet for a Small Planet” and experimentation with a more plant-based diet helped to shape his understanding of the value of this lifestyle. His wife Julie, a wonderful cook, pushed him over the edge to adopt a delicious vegan approach soon after they met 17 years ago. Their two sons Prema, 9, and Joshua, 7, are vibrant lifelong vegans.
Robert and his family will be flown to Kauai to enjoy a feast at the Blossoming Lotus Restaurant and tropical treats at the Lotus Root Juice Bar and Bakery. Click here to read Roberts amazing essay.

November 1st is WORLD VEGAN DAY, the annual celebration of all things vegan. The theme this year is vegan diversity, demonstrating that anyone can embrace the diet and lifestyle that provides countless health benefits. The fact that World Vegan Day falls within National Breast Cancer Month is no coincidence. Much research has shown that embracing a plant based diet significantly reduces a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer.
For an inspiring story of one woman’s victorious battle with breast cancer, please check out Heather Joses’ Beating Breast Cancer: My Journey Back to Health Through Vegetarianism.
As one of our winners, Becky C. from Centennial, Colorado writes,“The most significant study is the effect red meat has on breast cancer in women. According to the National Cancer Institute, women that eat meat daily have four times the risk of developing breast cancer than women who don’t. Also, to reduce the risk of breast cancer, the Harvard Nurses’ Health Study found that eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables significantly lowered a woman’s risk by more than 20%.”
Even those with cancer have found that switching to a plant based diet helps contain the condition. As another one of our winners Melissa S. from St. Joseph, Missouri writes, “While the scans show that there is still cancer present, it is far from threatening my life, and even the doctors who pushed for me to do Chemotherapy are resigned to the fact that 'whatever you are doing seems to be working'”.
Another entrant writes, “I just finished 1 and 1/2 years of chemo (now cancer free)and I credit my comeback and the great way I feel now to my diet. My vegetarian diet helped me through the cancer and the post treatment.”
